IMP vs. Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Choosing between Insulated Metal Panels (IMP) and closed-cell spray foam is a critical decision in cold storage construction. Both systems offer high R-values, but their performance, installation, and long-term durability differ significantly.
Insulated Metal Panels (IMP)
IMPs consist of a foam core (typically polyisocyanurate) sandwiched between two layers of factory-finished steel. They provide a predictable, uniform R-value and a built-in vapor barrier. Because they are factory-manufactured, quality control is high, and the panels can double as the structural skin of the building.
Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is applied directly to substrates like masonry or steel. It is highly effective at sealing irregular shapes and providing a seamless air barrier. However, performance depends heavily on environmental conditions during application (temperature and humidity) and the skill of the installer.
